Today’s programme lets the organ dress for a royal wedding. In Storkyrkan, the historic setting for royal ceremonies and several Swedish royal weddings, Mattias Wager brings together music of splendour, tenderness and festive procession.
Johann Sebastian Bach frames the programme with music of ceremonial radiance and spiritual depth: the brilliant Sinfonia from Wir danken dir, Gott and the beloved chorale Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, whose call to awakening has long carried associations of expectation, joy and fulfilment.
The wedding theme continues through music closely linked to procession, blessing and celebration. The traditional Leksands brudmarsch brings Swedish folk colour into the cathedral, while Jeremiah Clarke’s festive Suite in D major evokes the ceremonial world of trumpets and royal occasions. Saint-Saëns’ Bénédiction nuptiale offers a more intimate moment of blessing, and Grieg’s Jeg elsker dig gives voice to love in its simplest and most direct form.
The programme also turns toward Swedish courtly tradition with music from Johan Helmich Roman’s Drottningholmsmusiken, written for royal festivities in the eighteenth century. Finally, Sigfrid Karg-Elert’s jubilant Praise the Lord with Drums and Cymbals sends the wedding procession out in a blaze of colour, rhythm and praise.
In this concert, Bach goes wedding: from solemn blessing to royal splendour, from folk tradition to cathedral grandeur.
