Baroque trumpets, tympani, strings and oboes join twenty-five jubilant voices in TBP’s season finale “Bach & Wings,” touching the theme of Christ’s ascension and sheltering care. Cantata BWV 137 Lobe den Herren, den mächtigen König der Ehren (“Praise the Lord, the mighty king of honour”) explores variations on Neander’s 1680 hymn, while Cantata BWV 43 Gott fähret auf mit Jauchzen (“God ascends with shouts of joy”) revisits the heroic drama of Easter from grand perspective. Rich choral works by Byrd, Sweelinck, Stanford, Shaw, and Friesen round out the 65-minute program.
