Handel Concerto a due cori No. 2
Bach Cantata No. 51, “Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen!”
Haydn Symphony No. 104 (“London”)
It’s hard to imagine these composers in better hands. The great Masaaki Suzuki has made the music of Bach and his inheritors his life’s work, with an unmatched discography and concert performances that have drawn the highest praise: “Breathtaking … tangible elation as well as contemplation and control” (Gramophone).
Your evening begins with a rare treat: one of Handel’s resplendent concerti a due cori, featuring a brilliant choir of oboes, bassoons, and horns. Next is another rarity: a glorious Bach cantata featuring Jone Martínez, a “beautiful, luminous, radiant” (Seville Diary) Spanish soprano hailed as a Baroque virtuoso.
Closing this beautiful program is Haydn’s masterful, final symphony, composed in London at the end of his career. Haydn was a superstar in London, lionized by audiences who clamored for each new composition. This brilliant symphony was an instant hit, filled with the Haydn hallmarks of drama, emotion, and wit—and featuring a finale that leaves the listener completely sated.
