BABYLON BERLIN, SEASON 4

Germany, 2021/22, German w/ English subtitles
Directors:Achim von Borries, Hendrik Handloegten, Tom Tykwer, Screenplay: Achim von Borries, Hendrik Handloegten, Tom Tykwer, Khyana El Bitar, Bettine von Borries, Music: Johnny Klimek, Tom Tykwer, Cast: Volker Bruch, Liv Lisa Fries, Lars Eidinger, Irene Böhm, Mark Ivanir
Based on Volker Kutscher’s best-selling “Gereon Rath Mysteries” series of novels, this groundbreaking series follows police detective Rath (Volker Bruch) and his unlikely partner, Charlotte Ritter (Liv Lisa Fries,) as they investigate cases in Weimar-era Berlin, a hotbed of crime and politics, sex and drugs, emancipation and extremism — all set against the backdrop of the political developments leading from the Weimar Republic to the spread of National Socialism.
Season 4 picks up in Berlin in 1930, where the Golden Twenties have led to the global stock market crash. At the dawn of the new decade and the looming Great Depression, times have undeniably changed. Very few have profited from the crash, like industrialist Alfred Nyssen (Lars Eidinger), who invests his profits and has ambitions that aim for nothing less than the whole world. Many have used the chaos in the city to their advantage, like the American mobster Abraham “Abe” Goldstein (Mark Ivanir), who shamelessly flaunts his wealth while looking for a lost family heirloom. Others have drastically fallen down the social ladder into homelessness and despair, like Toni Ritter (Irene Böhm), who roams the streets of Berlin with a group of young peers, fighting for survival–a fact that makes her sister Charlotte worry and even risk her job. All the while, Gereon’s investigations lead him into the boxing milieu–and politically, uncomfortably close to Hitler’s SA. Yet some are still trying to restore order. It remains questionable to what avail, as the Nazis’ march to power is in full swing.
