Join us for Babka and Brooches 101 hosted by Danielle deCongé of PUT A BROOCH ON IT and featuring distinguished fashion historian Victoria Pass from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). Pass will delve into the rich history and significance of brooches, exploring their role in fashion across different cultures and eras. From ancient adornments to contemporary statement pieces, this presentation will offer a captivating look at how brooches have evolved as symbols of personal expression and style.

Originally from Baltimore, Danielle deCongé sprouted her burgeoning artistic wings at The Park School, where a junior year interview with Betty Cooke sparked her interest in pursuing a BFA in Jewelry & Fine Metals at Pratt Institute in New York City. Her creative pursuits at deCongé Jewelry & Alchemy flourished before she took an extended holiday in London to study Creative & Cultural Entrepreneurship (ICCE) at the University of London, Goldsmiths just before the coronavirus pandemic. Perhaps most importantly, she is a cat mom to a 12-year-old diabetic tuxedo.

Victoria Rose Pass is an associate professor of fashion and design history at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Her essay “Racial Masquerades in the Magazines: Defining White Femininity Between the Wars,” was published in the Journal of Modern Periodical Studies in 2020. She co-edited the book Design Beyond the Canon with Jennifer Kauffman-Buhler and Christopher Wilson published by Bloomsbury in February 2019 which includes her essay, “The Mangbetu Coiffure: A Story of Cars, Hats, Branding, and Appropriation.” She also co-edited the volume, Women’s Magazines in Print and New Media with Noliwe Rooks and Ayana Weekley, which was published by Routledge in 2016. The volume included her essay, “Encountering Africa in Vogue: Irving Penn’s African Essays.” Her writing has also appeared in Fashion, Style & Popular Culture, Omenka Magazine, Tauko, and BmoreArt. The Jewelry Library (TJL) is a collaborative space curated for jewelry people by jewelry people. Founded in 2018, TJL hosts a wide range of exhibitions, talks, and events all across the jewelry-spectrum, collaborating with both contemporary and vintage gallerists, artists, and collectors, as well as storytellers, historians, makers, and wearers. Along with an archive, library, and gallery space–which houses the TJL collection of books and jewelry–there is a penthouse space, The Great Room @ The Jewelry Library, for larger community gatherings. In early 2025, TJL will be opening a multi-faceted ground floor space in the Chelsea-Nomad neighborhood.

Each November, NYC Jewelry Week proudly presents ‘The Week,’ a 7-day celebration dedicated to the art of jewelry. This annual event invites a global audience to explore the world of jewelry through a dynamic mix of in-person and virtual experiences, spanning New York City and beyond.
