In 1999, The New York Times wrote, “There is magic growing in the old American Banknote Building on Barretto Street in the South Bronx. A former warehouse, it is now the home of the Arthur Aviles Typical Theater… a funky, welcoming performance space filled with possibilities.”

Those possibilities flourished through grit, talent, gumption, sweat — and even aluminum foil — as a fierce group of dancers, artists, and community members banded together to help Arthur Avilés and Charles Rice-González create and establish BAAD! in Hunts Point, where that magic took root and thrived for fourteen transformative years.

For one fabulous night, Bronxlandia will become a party portal, transporting us back to where it all began — with food, performances, and an immersive multimedia exhibit that celebrates the spark, the struggle, and the brilliance that launched it all.
