Inspiration: Parodies can be a drag. But Say Cheesecake! cares to be different. This lesbian-feminist musical tribute to The Golden Girls invites fans to see their favorite foursome personified with respect and representation, audacity and authenticity. I wrote this show not just because I am a gargantuan fan of the sitcom, but because I wanted to write the kind of tribute the Girls deserve: one in which our beloved sorority of seniority would be portrayed not by Caucasian cisgender men but instead embodied by female-identifying and age-appropriate actors of all ethnicities. Rather than parodying the characters and their standout traits (the nice one, the sexy one, the smart one, the old one), Say Cheesecake! parodies the abundance of absurdities in the 1980s, a decade that was at once progressive and regressive. There was this societal quest to go back to the future, specifically the clean-cut, white-bread conservatism of the nifty fifties, and in this quest we revived the sexism, heterosexism, racism, ageism, and consumerism exuberant in that era. Say Cheesecake! aims to deconstruct these timeless institutions, while also exploring how they exist today.
