“This is a sound and message that reaches the heart, beyond imposed borders, curfews and barbed wire, with a dream for the end to the struggle.” Sådan har The Quietus beskrevet sanger og aktivist Aziza Brahims på en gang håbefulde og sørgmodige afroblues. Brahim er født og opvokset i Saharawi-flygtningelejrene langs grænsen mellem Algeriet og Vestsahara, men flygtede som teenager med sin familie i 1975 i forbindelse med det politiske undertrykkelsesregime, der fulgte efter Marokkos invasion af Vestsahara i 1975. Efter et omrejsende liv lever Aziza Brahim nu i eksil i Spanien, men i hver en tone hun synger, klinger minderne fra hendes opvækst, sorgen over at have forladt sit hjemland og empatien med de mange skæbner, som fortsat må leve i flygtningelejrene. Samtidig stråler et ukueligt håb igennem Brahims sange, som også har et vidtfavnende globalt udsyn og kombinerer både traditionelle og moderne klange fra både nord og syd.
Aziza Brahim har netop udsendt sit femte album “Mawja (2024), som er det tredje i rækken på ikoniske Glitterbeat Records. Hendes stemme er som altid en kilde til dybe og resonante følelser, og teksterne kredser om længslen efter hjemlandet, kampen for frihed og kærligheden til hendes familie gennem mange generationer. Brahims stemme akkompagneres smukt af Saharansk og iberisk percussion, fyldige guitarer og varm, omsluttende bas. Aziza Brahims talent har bragt hende rundt på festivaler som Le Guess Who, Reeperbahn Festival, WOMAD, og i på scenen Royal Albert Hall. This is how The Quietus has described singer and activist Aziza Brahim's simultaneously hopeful and mournful afroblues. Brahim was born and raised in the Saharawi refugee camps along the border between Algeria and Western Sahara, but fled as a teenager with her family in 1975 in connection with the political repression regime that followed Morocco's invasion of Western Sahara in 1975. After a nomadic life, Aziza Brahim now lives in exile in Spain, but in every note she sings, the memories of her upbringing resonate, the sorrow of leaving her homeland, and the empathy with the many fates that continue to live in the refugee camps. At the same time, an indomitable hope shines through Brahim's songs, which also have a broad global outlook and combine both traditional and modern sounds from both north and south.
Aziza Brahim has just released her fifth album "Mawja (2024)," which is the third in the series on the iconic Glitterbeat Records. Her voice is, as always, a source of deep and resonant emotions, and the lyrics revolve around the longing for the homeland, the struggle for freedom, and the love for her family through many generations. Brahim's voice is beautifully accompanied by Saharan and Iberian percussion, rich guitars, and warm, enveloping bass.
