Presented by Tacoma Refugee Choir in partnership with Tacoma Creates
Our community is full of neighbors and friends who passionately cultivate musical traditions from around the world. This year, Tacoma Refugee Choir invites all music lovers to learn more about the songs and stories that have inspired and enriched our region. This is an opportunity to connect with others through the joy of singing and to explore how music can help make harmony out of our diversity.
Guest Artist: Roger Rigor
Renowned musician, activist, and educator Roger Rigor will guide us through a vibrant journey of Filipino music—past, present, and future. Experience the rich tapestry of Filipino musical traditions through hands-on learning and storytelling.
Philippine-born and raised, retired public-school, math/science teacher, "Kuya" Roger, as he is fondly called by many of his young students, is the Chairman of the Board of the Foundation for Philippine Progress. Lately, he is actively involved with young artists, collaborating and creating music that reflects the times and the issues that impact the Philippines; promotes the re- awakening of the Filipino voice and narrative in music, from the roots of Original Pilipino Music (or OPM) and against the backdrop of the copy-cat years of Western cultural influence; he also teaches Tagalog in the Foundation’s effort to bridge the cultural gap prevalent among the growing global Filipino diaspora.
