AWHONN Intermediate Instructor Workshop
This workshop is taught by AWHONN-approved Instructor Trainers. The workshop prepares participants to teach the IntermediateFetal Monitoring Course. Content includes principles and application of adult learning theory as applicable for teaching the Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course, such as integrating principles of adult learning into the didactic and skills course components,incorporating appropriate teaching methods and strategies during the lecture, and demonstrating knowledge of the assignedcomponents of the course during the micro-teach. Information about the administrative and operational aspects of FHM is presented.This workshop is the initial step for individuals who wish to become approved AWHONN FHM Program Instructors.
Learning Outcomes:
• Apply adult learning/teaching principles to the Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course
• Demonstrate entry-level proficiency in teaching selected segments of the Intermediate Fetal Course (lecture and skill stations)
• Manage classroom issues and formulate problem-solving techniques
• Identify administrative responsibilities, policies, and procedures of the Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course
• Demonstrate navigation of the AWHONN website for administrative functions
Nursing Contact Hours:
6 nursing contact hours available through January 31, 2028
Workshop Format:
Successful completion of online prerequisite education is required prior to attending the one-day in-person portion of the course.
• prerequisite online learning approximately two hours.
• in-person workshop is four hours and cannot be taught virtually.
Nursing contact hours will be awarded after the successful completion of a micro teach and awarded after the online evaluation is completed and is required to receive nursing contact hours for the course.
Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Instructor Candidate
- Must have two years of experience with fetal monitoring in an intrapartum unit to be eligible to apply.
- Complete an Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course teach back within 1 year of completing the Intermediate Instructor Workshop.
- Verify that candidates have completed the Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course within the last three (3) years.
- During the Instructor Candidates teach back, they must teach a minimum of 25% of the total course (if co-teaching with another instructor and be present during the entire duration of the class).
Listed below are accepted instructor-level certifications:
- For the FHM Program, the acceptable NCC certifications include Inpatient Obstetric Nursing (RNC-OB ®), Inpatient Antepartum Nursing (RNC-IAP ®), or Electronic Fetal Monitoring (CEFM ®).
General Instructor Requirements
- Maintain a full AWHONN membership in good standing
- Maintain required certifications as identified by the specific instructor-led course.
- Disclose any financial relationship and the nature of the relationship with the named ineligible company, as the relationship may influence the content of any AWHONN NCPD courses.
- Follow the ANCC Standards of Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education.
