Dhrupad, the ancient and sublime vocal tradition of Hindustani classical music, is a portal to a profound inner world. This millennia-old art form transcends mere entertainment, weaving a tapestry of serenity, contemplation and ecstasy that allows you to dive deep within yourself. Each meticulously crafted note is an invitation to connect with a sense of peace and explore the depths of your being. Dhrupad has been described as musical poetry and as the soul of Indian music.
Our visiting artist and teacher Prassanna Vishwanathan comes from Mumbai, India. He is a dedicated practitioner of Dhrupad vocal music and a senior disciple of Pt. Uday Bhawalkar (a living legend of this tradition) and serves as a singer and teacher in this revered tradition. Formerly a senior scholar at the esteemed ITC Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata, his impressive repertoire includes numerous solo Dhrupad concerts and workshops held both in India and abroad.
Prassanna is also a skilled composer, having created musical scores for various documentaries, television programs, promos, and films. His contributions have earned him recognition, with the Rotary Club of Coimbatore Metropolis presenting him with the prestigious "Young Achievers Award” in honor of his accomplishments as a Dhrupad singer, showcasing his commitment and passion for this rich musical heritage.
During this weekend-long workshop you will gain a foundational understanding of Dhrupad. You will learn the core elements that create the distinct Dhrupad sound - voice, syllables, tonal modulation, rhythm, and pronunciation. You will explore the concept of sound in time and delve into the traditional Dhrupad approach to unfolding a raga (melody).

No prior experience is necessary! That said...seasoned musicians will also find immense value from this workshop as the approach to the voice and sound is quite different from what we've got used to here in the West.
