Our first talk of the new year will be led by wildlife photographer Don Campbell, who will present on wildlife conservation efforts in Zambia. In May and June of 2024 Don visited Zambia, and his images were used to make up this presentation. He spent six days each in two camps: the first was Chindeni Bush Camp, arranged through Civilized Adventures in Calgary, and the second was in Chicunto Safaris Lodge, hosted by Pangolin Tours. The guides were very knowledgeable, familiar with the animals and birds of the region, and knew their behaviour and habits, so that they could put Don and other photographers within range of the wildlife to capture images without pressure.
The Zambian Government controls the location, size and number of guests for each camp, with each having only two photography vehicles, so that unlike other countries in Africa like Botswana and Tanzania, they never had more than two vehicles in an area, rather than 20 to 30. They also only allowed a single angle on the action; this way the animals were less distressed by the group’s presence.
