Averting the Cascade: The U.S.-Australia Alliance in a New Nuclear Age
About this Event
The Institute for Indo-Pacific Security (IIPS) invites you to join us for an in-person event presenting our new report on “Averting a Proliferation Cascade: The U.S.-Australia Alliance and Strategic Deterrence." The report’s author, Senior Director Michael Mazza, will join Dr. Rebeccah Heinrichs, Dr. Gregory Brown, and Moderator Jennifer Hong to discuss the report’s findings and their implications for alliance policy, regional security, and the future of nuclear deterrence in the Indo-Pacific. Attendance is limited. Please RSVP to secure a spot.
“Averting a Proliferation Cascade” examines the evolving nuclear landscape in the Indo-Pacific, where growing great-power competition and expanding nuclear arsenals are increasing the risk of both vertical and horizontal proliferation. The report assesses how questions about the future credibility of the U.S. nuclear umbrella could shape allied decision-making, including about their non-nuclear status. It argues that the United States and Australia can work together to strengthen strategic deterrence and reduce proliferation risks by deepening alliance cooperation, reinforcing the credibility of extended deterrence, and adapting to a more complex “third nuclear age.”
