The Shaftesbury Theatre first opened its doors on 26 December 1911 under the name New Prince’s Theatre, launching with a production of The Three Musketeers. Designed by Bertie Crewe for Walter and Frederick Melville, the venue was renamed the Prince’s Theatre in 1914 and then the Shaftesbury Theatre in 1963. It has survived bombings, structural collapse, and threats of redevelopment—each time emerging stronger, thanks in part to successful public campaigns to preserve it.
