About this Event

AV CLUB is an ongoing program of curated 16mm short film screenings designed to provoke discussion, create awareness of unique library resources held by the Special Collections Division of the Miami-Dade Public Library System and generate enthusiasm for learning and research. Tonight: a lineup of films inspired by The Barnacle, the 19th-century home of Ralph Munroe and the oldest house in Miami-Dade County still standing in its original location.

We will watch:

"Coconut Grove" (1974) A documentary produced by the Junior League of Miami and written by historian Arva Moore Parks. The film uses still photographs interspersed with live-action shots to show the history, identity, and development of this community on the bay.

"Color Flight" (1938) Len Lye used hand-painting and stenciling directly on the filmstock for this advertisement for Imperial Airways.

"Powers of Ten" (1978) Presents a linear view of the universe from the nucleus of a carbon atom, to the human scale, to the sea of galaxies. Demonstrates the powers of ten using an image, narration and a dashboard to give a clue to the relative size of things and to show what the addition of another zero to any number means.

"Man Who Planted Trees" (1987) This animated parable tells the story of one man's indomitable spirit. Recovering from the trauma of war, the man turned a desolate land into a forest over a sixty-year period. The beautiful animation won an Academy Award for Best Animated Short.

Vincent Nastasi, museum registrar at The Barnacle Historic State Park, will offer a guided tour of the library exhibit space and give unique insights into the collection.

For this outdoor event, it is recommended that attendees bring blankets or lawn seating.

Doors will open at 6pm; films will start at 7pm.

Parking is available across Main Highway in the Playhouse Lot.
