About this Event
Come along and join us on 26 March for Lean Construction ANZ’s 2nd Community of Practice (CoP) in 2026.
Topic: Automated Drainage Inspection Using AI
Big Build Roads (VIDA Roads) oversees the construction of extensive drainage networks beneath road upgrade projects. Prior to asset handover, these drainage network must be inspected visually for potential defects in accordance with VicRoads standards.
Currently, inspection is conducted through CCTV recordings of drainage lines, which are then manually reviewed by multiple stakeholders. This process is time-consuming, inconsistent, and susceptible to human error. As a result, defect identification can be delayed, leading to inefficiencies that impact project timelines, compliance processes, and final asset handover.
To address these challenges, there is a growing need for a more efficient and automated approach to reviewing drainage inspection footage and generating defect inspection reports. Such an approach has the potential to significantly reduce processing time and associated costs while improving accuracy, consistency, and overall quality of asset completion.
This session will present an initiative led by VIDA’s HIVE Research and Development team to introduce an AI-driven solution designed to streamline the reviewing and reporting of underground drainage defects. The presentation will also highlight the results of a pilot program currently being conducted in collaboration with eight Big Build Roads project teams, seven delivery contractors, and key stakeholders from the Department of Transport and Planning. The initiative demonstrates how emerging technologies and AI solutions can enhance operational efficiency and support the automation of traditional reviewing and inspection processes.
