This workshop is about increasing representation and employment in Film, TV and other audiovisual cultural expressions for autistic people and neurodivergent creatives in general. It is an interdisciplinary project at the crossroads of health, art, and the concerns of the public. The project also has ties to – and grows out of - a larger research project. The workshop will require two days of in-person work. The workshop will be held by Charlie Wilson. Wilson is a PhD Candidate at Kingston University looking into autism representation in film and television. They are also a photographer, poet and creative with a specialist in queer and disabled activism.

The workshop will provide a place for autistic filmmakers and artists to explore their feelings surrounding their representation in film and television. The creative output (audiovisual creations/”short-form videos”) will artistically portray autism and also, of course, be created by autistic creatives. These creations will work simultaneously as both independent artworks and information artifacts which can give insights into good artistic representation.
The first day will involve a very short lecture on what has been discussed in focus groups as part of the larger research project. This will help participants understand what other autistic people have said on the current media representation and give necessary context to the workshop.
The participants will then be split into groups and discuss ideas they have for their 2–3-minute short films. The second day is all about creating these short-form videos, with smartphones, and Capcut for editing.
The project aims to have knock-on effects to increase access in general to the industry by providing evidence that autistic creatives deserve to be heard and seen and that accommodating them in employment is beneficial to all and leads to better representation.
