About this Event

RFA would like to invite you to attend our event on March 29th to present research findings on autism, race and culture to professionals in Newham.

We will have a number of guest speakers that will share their lived-experiences and a panel of guests including a local councillor. This will be an impactful event for those that truly wish to make a difference.

In 2022, RFA received funds to research barriers to accessing services for autistic people from ethnically diverse communities, living in Newham. Black and Asian parent/carers of autistic individuals completed a survey to gain a better understanding the barriers they are facing and how professionals can support them to improve access to services. Interviewing parent/carers with lived-experiences provided us with a deeper insight into barriers and racial equalities.

We created a number of provisions including support workshops and drop-in surgeries for black and Asian parent/carers. We partnered with Deep Black to create a unique project, ‘Photographing Feelings’ where a group of autistic young people from ethnically diverse communities learned photographic skills and worked around themes of identity and ethnicity. This project was repeated in Little Ilford School and also with a group Parent/carers. Photos from this project which will be exhibited at the event.

With these provisions, Resources for Autism have extended our reach, engaging over 150 individuals.

As professionals, working in Newham we need to walk our talk, so we expect as many organisations to join this event.
