Author’s Talk with Terry J. Ligon

During Freedmen Researchers Week, the Indian Territory Museum of Black Creek Freedmen History will be hosting an Author’s Talk with Terry J. Ligon on August 15 at 1:00 p.m. CST located at 8625 S. Walker Ave, Oklahoma City, OK 73139.
A powerful and essential read for anyone studying the rich history of the Freedmen of Indian Territory, Terry J. Ligon’s Enslaved on the Trail of Tears brings forward a story long overlooked yet central to understanding the true experience of removal, survival, and identity.
Terry weaves together historical records, genealogical evidence, and lived memory to show how Freedmen ancestors were enslaved and forcibly removed alongside all five Southeastern tribes to Indian Territory, now Oklahoma. He reminds us that the enslaved were present at every stage of removal, even when misclassified or omitted from the records.
Rhonda Grayson was deeply moved to see her own ancestor, America Williams, included in this important work. Terry’s skill as a genealogist and researcher is exceptional, and those who have known him for more than twenty years can attest to his dedication, accuracy, and compassion in telling Freedmen stories with dignity.
The community looks forward to visiting with him at the upcoming research event in Oklahoma City. Freedmen descendants throughout all Five Tribes continue to preserve history, uplift community, and ensure these truths are shared for all to learn. This history matters, and we are grateful for every person committed to documenting and teaching it.
