An author talk about the overlap between ethical practices of self-change and political engagement, activism, and intervention.
About this Event

Daniel Wyche will be in conversation with Davey Tomlinson about Daniel's new book , an exploration of the overlap between ethical practices of self-change and political engagement, activism, and intervention. Drawing on insights about ancient philosophical practices from thinkers like Pierre Hadot, the book asks how contemporary organizers, activists, and artists, including Civil Rights era figures like Martin Luther King Jr. have understood and acted on ideas about the role of transforming oneself and one's community while transforming the political world. We will ask, with the help of these figures, just what is the relationship between the care of the self and the care of the other, of others, of the city, and of the world? While the conversation will range over a number of topics, we are excited to draw on Tomlinson's expertise in Buddhist and other South Asian traditions to think together about these themes across different times, places, and situations.

Daniel Louis Wyche is Senior Research Fellow at the Columbia University Center for Contemporary Critical Theory and the author of The Care of the Self and the Care of the Other: From Spiritual Exercises to Political Transformation.

Davey K. Tomlinson is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Villanova University. His research is centered on late Indian Buddhist philosophy, Buddhist tantra, and debates about buddhahood and transformative experience. He is currently completing a monograph, What Is It Like To Be A Buddha? Indian Buddhist Philosophy After the Tantric Turn, as well as a book in collaboration with Nilanjan Das and Catherine Prueitt, Prajñākaragupta On What Exists.
