The Friends of the La Mesa Library are proud to host an amazing opportunity for area youth and aspiring graphic artists at La Mesa Library. Hear from award-winning graphic novelist, cartoonist and teacher, Gene Luen Yang from 6 to 7 p.m., Friday, June 7.
Gene was named a National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature by the Library of Congress in 2016, and advocates for the importance of reading, especially reading diversely. His graphic novel American Born Chinese, a National Book Award finalist and Printz Award winner, has been adapted into an original series on Disney+ staring Ben Wang, Michelle Yeoh, Chin Han, Yeo Yann Yann, Daniel Wu, Ke Huy Quan, Jim Liu and Sydney Taylor.
According to a previous interview with Forbes, American Born Chinese, was stated as one of the most topical Chinese American novels. More recently, Yang further complemented Chinese American culture with his most recent novel, Lunar New Year Love Story. Together with LeUyen Pham, the newest addition to his expansive and diverse collection, gives readers a heartwarming rom-com about fate, family, forgiveness and lion dancing -- one of our most popular cultural performance events held at several San Diego County Library branches.
His other works include Secret Coders (with Mike Holmes), The Shadow Hero (with Sonny Liew), Superman from DC Comics (with various artists), and the Avatar: The Last Airbender series from Dark Horse Comics (with Gurihiru). In 2016, he was named a MacArthur Foundation Fellow. In addition to Lunar New Year Love Story, his most recent books are Dragon Hoops from First Second Books and Superman Smashes the Klan from DC Comics.
Find selections at sdcl.org and join us for the free public event at 6 p.m., Friday, June 7, at La Mesa Library, where he will discuss his professional writing journey and upcoming work to look forward to.
