In "Enchanted Ground," Sharon Hatfield tells the true story of Koons, who created a spirit house in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains that allegedly rivaled the renowned attractions of the famed P. T. Barnum. His story reflects more than spectacle; it represents a shift toward optimism and reform. Koons’s séances were part of the Second Great Awakening movement, embodying a uniquely American cultural moment that continues to influence society today.
