Chicago-based Caffall is a writer and musician whose climate crisis-themed novel and memoir have been making big waves since their 2024 release! In “All the Water,” a family and their researcher friends create a settlement atop the American Museum of Natural History, in an otherwise-deserted New York City, hunting and growing food in Central Park while working to save the museum’s collections. When a superstorm forces them north, they confront some dark realities while trying to forge a new world. In “Mourner’s,” Caffall – a mother whose family history is haunted by a genetic kidney disease – reflects on how the stories of animals in two collapsing marine ecosystems (the Gulf of Maine and the Long Island Sound) relate to the family facing a life-threatening illness on their shores.
