Author Event: Susan D. Levitte, Secrets in the Woods

Explore the historical research and storytelling behind the catastrophic 1871 fires that devastated both the east and west shores of the Bay of Green Bay. Susan examines the dual impact of the deadly Peshtigo firestorm to the west and the infernos that leveled the Belgian settlements of Door and Kewaunee Counties to the east. The program highlights Green Bay’s critical role as the primary sanctuary and relief hub—serving as the communication link to the outside world and the base for emergency hospitals and relief committees that aided thousands of destitute survivors. Susan will share forgotten stories of tragedy and survival taken from newspaper clips, family histories, and research, demonstrating how she wove these threads of pioneer resilience into her bestselling novel, Secrets in the Woods.
