Author event! Simone Gorrindo with Rufi Thorpe

Zibby’s Bookshop is thrilled to host Simone Gorrindo as she celebrates the launch of her book, THE WIVES! Simone will be joined in conversation by Rufi Thorpe, author of THE KNOCKOUT QUEEN!

About the book:

Simone Gorrindo became an unlikely and reluctant military spouse at 27-years-old when her fiancé, Andrew, felt called to join a rapid deployment special ops unit of the U.S. Army during the War in Afghanistan. Simone quit her dream job as an editor in NYC and, after a quick court room wedding, she and Andrew settled in Fort Benning, Georgia. Simone—who had once marched against the war in Iraq—was officially a military spouse. Two weeks later, Andrew deployed to Afghanistan on the first of many months-long deployments that found Simone alone on the home front facing her own battles against the isolation, fear, and frustration of a marriage to an active-duty soldier. But where there’s one military spouse, there’s at least a unit’s-worth more. As Simone met the diverse community of other wives her loneliness and skepticism gave way to the love and support of found friendship and family.

About the authors:
Simone Gorrindo’s writing has appeared in The New York Times, New York magazine, Longreads, Los Angeles Review of Books, The Christian Science Monitor, The Best Women’s Travel Writing, Self, and others. She holds an MS in journalism from Columbia University, and has received fellowships and grants for her writing and reporting from the International Women’s Media Foundation, the Georgia Council for the Arts, and the Hambidge Center for Creative Arts and Sciences. She lives in Tacoma, Washington, with her husband and two children. The Wives is her first book.

Rufi Thorpe received her MFA from the University of Virginia in 2009. She is the author of four novels, The Girls from Corona Del Mar, Dear Fang, With Love, and her most recent, The Knockout Queen, which was a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner award. Her newest Book, Margo's Got Money Troubles, will be out 6/11/24. She lives in California with her husband and two sons.
