We are hosting an Author Night on Friday, July 12, 2024 from 5:30-7:00pm in collaboration with the Salinas Public Library. Please join us at this FREE ticketed event as Author Dr. Sandra E. Bonura will present a colorful & interactive slideshow on the life of Claus Spreckels. Afterwards, we invite you to enjoy delicious refreshments as Sandee signs copies of her biography which are also available for purchase. Descendants of those who worked for the Spreckels Sugar Beet Enterprise are invited to bring their photos and stories to share. Claus Spreckels emigrated from Germany to the United States with only seventy-five cents in his pocket before he went on to build a sugar empire and become one of the richest Americans in history. In “The Sugar King of California” Sandra E. Bonura tells the rags-to-riches story of Spreckels’s role in the development of the sugarcane industry in the American West and across the Pacific. He built the largest beet sugar refinery in the world in the Salinas Valley, providing employment for thousands, including John Steinbeck and his family. Spreckels’s biography is one of business triumph and tragedy, a family torn apart by money, jealousy, and ego.
