About this Event

As part of Islington's Black History Month 2022 Celebrations, join author and storyteller Monica Clarke as she reads from her children’s book, Apartheid and Me. You'll be taken on a journey through the book's pages and beyond and participate in drawing activities led by the book's illustrator, Maureen Bocking.

Copies of the book will be given to attendees (1 per family group) at no cost to participants. Additional copies can be purchased.

About the book:

Nangamza, who is 7 years old, lived with her grandmother (Ouma) in a township in South Africa during Apartheid.

In her own words she tells of her experiences of ‘weird Apartheid’ as she lives it.

The book explains what apartheid was and we'll talk about how it came to end, with age appropriate language.

Fully illustrated, Apartheid and Me, is written for the learning of children up to age10, to help them recognise inequality and discrimination no matter how these are disguised.

The session is hosted by The Liliesleaf Trust UK's Anti-Apartheid Legacy: Centre of Memory and Learning. Only 18 spaces are available, and each child attending must be accompanied by a parent or carer. Adults may not attend if they are not accompanying a participating child.

The session will be held at Islington's Central Library, starting at 10.30am on Saturday 8th October. The session will end at approximately 12 noon. Library is accessed at 2 Fieldway Crescent, London N5 1PF
