About this Event
Join Echo Park music historian Andrew Perer at the Edendale Library on Saturday June 27th at 12:00 p.m. to discuss his new book, Turn My Head Into Sound: A History of Kevin Shields and My Bloody Valentine. We’ll learn all about Kevin Shields, who has somehow managed to stay under the radar although he’s considered one of the most talented and influential musicians of his time – famous fans of his band include Brian Eno, Patti Smith, Trent Reznor, Billy Corgan, Robert Smith of The Cure, Sofia Coppola, and many others. Along with material from the book we’ll enjoy music and video clips and interesting bonus content that had to be cut from the book for length.
UK shoegaze legends My Bloody Valentine have released only three albums (along with four accompanying singles) in their forty-year career, yet each album has made a seismic impact, especially 1991’s Loveless, an undisputed masterpiece voted in polls far and wide as the best album of its decade – followed by more than 20 years of silence as bewildered fans awaited its long-delayed follow up. Turn My Head Into Sound is the first proper biography of Kevin Shields and MBV, starting with his birth and ending in 2025. It’s based on archival research gathered over 30 years, along with interviews with people who were there, some going on the record for the first time. Longtime fans of the band will find plenty of revelations here, including the full story of the tumultuous period at Island Records following the release of Loveless.
Shields is truly a one-of-a-kind musician, and this book—which fills in the gaps, corrects errors, and takes an objective look at his and the band’s entire career, warts and all—paints the full picture of one of the most revolutionary sonic artists of our time, including his work outside of MBV as an engineer, producer, remixer, and auxiliary member of Primal Scream, as well as his work on to the soundtracks to Sofia Coppola’s films (Lost in Translation, Marie Antoinette), and his collaborations with Brian Eno and Patti Smith among others.
Celebrate with us the sights, sounds, and stories of My Bloody Valentine, who are currently touring and whose influence continues to resonate in the thriving neo-shoegaze scene of today. Copies will be available for purchase and signing by the author. Email [email protected] for more information.
