About this Event
What is Authentic Relating?
Authentic Relating is a practice that emerged out of San Francisco in the early 1990s. It has continued to evolve, as well as inspire many related movements, since then.
With Authentic Relating Games, we have the opportunity to explore all the beauty and challenge of relating, in the context of structured play and exercises supported by clear boundaries and agreements. By first dropping some of our social scripts and habitual ways of relating, we open up a space for learning new skills and discovering new capacities that might enable us to relate with ourselves and the world in a way that is more honest, compassionate, and deeply co-operative.
In the beautifully crafted words written by the team at Authentic Revolution,
"Authentic Relating is the practice of freely expressing your true experience in the company of others. Expressing in this way enables you to create connections in the world based on who you really are."
Furthermore, while the definition of AR referred to above is central to Authentic Relating, it doesn't really encompass all of what the games we play achieve. In addition to discovering and learning to skillfully and artfully express our true, in-the-moment experience—which is in itself transformational—some of these games are more focused on generating specific, intentionally chosen moods within ourselves. And if we repeatedly embody these intentionally chosen moods and attitudes, they have the potential to become dispositional. Finding and focussing on what we find valuable rather than problematic, choosing curiosity over judgment (which includes curiosity towards our own judgements!), and learning to lean into happiness and playfulness, are lovely examples of this.
Authentic Relating Games & Practices will very likely positively influence your day-to-day relationships. They are also a place to simply have fun, play, and connect with others interested in experiencing a more genuine approach to relating than we are often used to. Should you feel called to join us in this exploration and co-learning, we welcome you, and look forward to meeting you there!
