About this Event
We write revolutions!
Over 1000 writers release wild words on audiences across Australia. Poets break free from their notebook cages landing on a stage near you.
Australian Poetry Slam 2024 (APS ’24) invites you to cheer, snap, hold-up scorecards in this nation-wide celebration of spoken-wordsmiths.
APS ’24 is about unleashing your thoughts; launching mini-revolutions, like a chorus of kingfishers on a mission.
Writers let fly. Alight upon the mic for two minutes. Shout, call out, even softly warble your fresh lit.
Crowds will flock with cheers and hoots. Judges, chosen from the audience, will send two poetic messages to represent Brisbane in the Queensland Final!
Poetry Slams and wordshops drop from July to October, converging on the National Final at Sydney Opera House on Sunday 13 October.
Are you the next APS Champion? Win a prize worth $20,000, including publication and gigs from Byron to Bali and beyond.
Poets must perform in their residing state or territory. Ful APS ’24 rules here: www.australianpoetryslam.com/rules
Hosted by Hula the Goddess.
Huda the Goddess is the 2021 Australian Poetry Slam Champion and two-time QLD champ. She is a spoken word poet, educator, dancer and community activist. Huda has published her debut poetry collection Introducing Me and a jazz poetry album Story of Another Soul in collaboration with Reuben Lewis. She is the founder of Black Ink, a local Magandjin-based BIPOC open mic as well as of She is, a local all-women BIPOC exhibition. As a proud African-Muslim woman it is important to her that young women from her community are represented. Huda aims that through sharing her experiences, others like herself will see just how much is possible.
Supported by the Australian Government through Creative Australia, Create NSW, Ubud Writers & Readers Festival, Byron Writers Festival and Singapore Writers Festival.
Presented as part of the Lord Mayor's Writers in Residence series.
(Doors open/poet sign up at 1pm, slam starts at 1.30pm)
