Die Ausstellung „Ein kurzer Urlaub” ist die Adaption eines Projekts, das 2025 im Polnischen Pavillon auf der Triennale di Milano präsentiert wurde. Als Antwort auf eine der größten Herausforderungen der Gegenwart – die Ungleichheit – entwerfen die Kuratorin Katarzyna Roj und die von ihr für die Ausstellung auserwählten Künstler*innen eine faszinierende, inklusive Vision urbaner Sanitärinfrastruktur. Der Entwurf greift auf zahlreiche, in der Geschichte von Städtebau und Hygiene verwurzelte Sanatoriums-Konzepte zurück, die Zugang zu Erholung und Komfort ermöglichen, welche von den „Erschöpfungsgesellschaften“ so dringend gebraucht werden. In Anlehnung an den gleichnamigen Film von Vittorio De Sica aus dem Jahr 1973 verbindet ein von der Architektin Aleksandra Wasilkowska entworfenes „Transsanatorium“ Funktionalismus mit Spiritualität und verwandelt städtische Abfallprodukte – Wärme, Boden, Grauwasser – in Ressourcen für Erneuerung, Genuss und Gesundheit. Der Begriff „Komfort“ wird dabei neudefiniert – als Fürsorge und Umverteilung.

A Brief Vacation
The Polish Institute in Berlin as Transsanatorium

The exhibition “A Brief Vacation” is an adaptation of a project that was presented in 2025 at the Polish Pavilion at the Triennale di Milano. In response to one of the greatest challenges of our time—inequality—curator Katarzyna Roj and the artists she selected for the exhibition develop a compelling, inclusive vision of urban sanitary infrastructure. The project draws on numerous sanatorium concepts rooted in the history of urban planning and hygiene, which provided access to rest and comfort—both urgently needed by today’s “exhaustion societies.” Inspired by the 1973 film by Vittorio De Sica, architect Aleksanda Wasilkowska’s “Transsanatorium” combines functionalism with spirituality and transforms urban waste products—heat, soil, and greywater—into resources for renewal, pleasure, and health. In this context, the concept of “comfort” is redefined—as care and redistribution.
