Auditory Reset: Gareth Davis (Berio, Sciarrino)

Auditory Reset is a new initiative of an ongoing concert programme line starting from October 2022 at A Lab in Amsterdam Noord. Every second Tuesday of the month from 18:00 till 18:30 we are presenting radiating musicians with intriguing performances.

On the 11th of July Gareth Davis an outstanding bass clarinettist is going to close our first series line with Berio's Sequenza IXc and Let me die before I wake... by Salvatore Sciarrino.

Sequenza IX written in 1980 was adapted from material composed in a preexisting work Chemins V which was originally written in 1979 for Clarinet and “Digital Filters”. Unfortunately the premiere proved unsuccessful due to the computer failing during the performance. Even when the computer functioned properly Berio still felt unsatisfied by the resulting product and decided to rework the existing material into a new work for solo clarinet.

The work is demanding for the performer by virtue of its disjunct intervallic style use of extended techniques such as quarter tones multiphonics rapid articulation and altissimo rhythmic precision and obligatory agility.

Continuing with the idea of extended techniques Sciarrino’s “Let me die before I wake…” is entirely constructed on broken sounds and multiphonics creating a kind of fog in which a melody an echo of Big Ben’s bells in London attempts to try and make itself heard through the mist.
