Historically, the Frank family, the Van Daan family, and Mr. Dussel were German Jews taking refuge in a secret annex in Mr. Frank’s office building in Amsterdam. However, it is the director’s intention to have a multi-racial cast rather than an all-white cast. People of all races, ethnicities, and genders are encouraged to audition.
ANNE FRANK is a 13 yr-old girl. She is warm, witty, intelligent, sensitive, and eternally hopeful. At times, she is a determined know-it-all. She adores her father but struggles to get along with her mother.
MARGOT FRANK is Anne’s 15 yr-old sister. She is quiet, obedient, friendly, and very intelligent. She is overwhelmed by the trials of living in hiding, but she acts as a peacemaker when her sister oversteps.
OTTO FRANK is Anne’s father. He is 40ish and from an upper middle-class background. He is wise, patient, and well-liked. He adores his family, especially Anne.
EDITH FRANK is Anne’s mother. 40ish. She is from a wealthy family and struggles with the day-to-day challenges of raising her daughters in hiding. Although she is loving, gracious, and moral, she eventually erupts in rage in response to her difficult situation.
MRS. VAN DAAN is a 40ish aged lower middle-class wife and mother. She is loud, egotistical, talky, suspicious, flirtatious, moody, critical, and overbearing. She creates much of the domestic tension in the action of the play.
MR. VAN DAAN is 40-50 years old. He is selfish, ungrateful, quarrelsome, and very critical of his teenaged son. He causes a huge blow-up with his deceptive behavior.
PETER VAN DAAN is a 17 yr-old boy. He is withdrawn, unsure, awkward, immature, and embarrassed by his quarrelsome parents. He eventually learns to enjoy Anne and Margot’s company and expresses interest in the other occupants
DUSSEL is a 40-50 yr-old dentist. He is stodgy, old-fashioned, super-critical of others, picky, and unhappy. He doesn’t like other people and he chooses to whine and complain rather than work to make life in the secret annex better.
MIEP is Mr. Frank’s employee and the family’s connection to the outside world. She is 30ish. She is courageous, friendly, and compassionate.
MR. KRALER is 35-45. He is a good and honest man. Another of Otto Frank’s employees, he helps Miep with the responsibilities of feeding and hiding the Annex occupants. He continues to run Mr. Frank’s company while the family is in hiding.
3 NAZIS MEN. One is a German soldier in uniform and the other two are Dutchmen sympathetic to the Nazi cause. They are brutal in their treatment of the Annex occupants
