Hyacinth Halvey of Irish Hill is adapted from the original one-act Hyacinth Halvey by turn-of-the-20th-century Irish playwright Augusta Gregory. Newly set in the Irish Hill neighborhood of Louisville in 1920, the year Prohibition became law, our fair citizens attempt to shift from life as they know it. When newcomer Hyacinth Halvey arrives on the train from Bardstown, hope springs forth that this stranger with outstanding character will provide the example neighbors desperately need. But all is not as it seems. Hyacinth Halvey of Irish Hill brings wit and whimsy to a tense time in our state's history, while integrating over 50 references to Louisville, the surrounding area and Kentucky in 1920. Produced at the beautiful site specific Commonwealth Theatre Center, audiences will delight in stepping back over 100 years into an Irish Hill where people arrived on trains and by horse and buggy. Directed by artistic co-director, Michelle Lori.

There are 6 roles in this production. The roles advertised below are not precast; should a role be cast by Sunday before the audition date, it will be removed from this listing immediately.
*Hyacinth Halvey – (presents as age 18 – 35 and male presenting) newcomer from wealth in Bardstown, aimless, immature, mistaken for someone with character
*Fairdy Farrell – (presents as age 18 – 35, non-binary) message carrier, grew up in poverty in Irish Hill, poet, musician, dreamer by nature, wants to leave
*Delaney Doherty – (any age, female presenting) Postmistress, educated, nosy, a gossip, cares for Fairdy in sisterly/motherly way, attracted to Carden
*Officer Carden – (any age, male presenting) beat officer, narcissistic, domineering, genuinely doesn’t care about others, but can fake it well
*James Quirke – (presents as age 30 – 60, male presenting) cooper, recent Irish immigrant, emotional, just trying to make ends meet
*Joyce Jeffers – (any age, female presenting) housekeeper for a parish priest, recent Irish immigrant, pious, judgmental, can be charming
*We also welcome any actors who wish to audition to be an understudy. These actors will be flexible to jump into any role during rehearsals, while learning one specific role in order to perform at least once in a performance during the run. Understudies may also have onstage time with the cast during group scenes, and be asked to improvise with audience interaction.
Among the things sought in potential cast members are inventiveness, keen comic timing, strong analytical skills, and a desire to explore the text beyond the commonplace expectation.
In person auditions will be a combination of scene readings, discussion, and group work. No monologue is necessary.
If you have a resume and a digital headshot or photo, please email them to [email protected] with the subject line “Hyacinth Auditions”. Or you may bring a resume to the audition. We will ask to record you saying your name for visual and sound reference, so no need to bring a headshot. We will have an audition form for you to complete upon arrival so we may know your conflicts upfront. Unfortunately, these are not formally paying roles, but if the show goes particularly well, there should be some small token of compensation.
??????? ???? ?? ???
We are happy to see anyone who feels that they can convince us that they are right to play any part: this matters more to us than any supposed preconceptions about written roles. Actors are not required to match the characters played in terms of typical expectation of age, gender, ethnicity, ability or racial identity, and trans actors are particularly invited to audition. The Chamber Theatre has a tradition of welcoming people of all backgrounds, identities, gender identities, and abilities, and is keen to welcome diverse and non-traditional candidates. We attempt to facilitate various needs by providing audition scripts and materials in a dyslexia and autism friendly font, and will send these sides in advance to those who request it. We are trying to be as inclusive in our casting as possible, and welcome suggestions on how we can do better in this regard.
