Rosie The Riveter | Written By Trey Clarkson
We are seeking a unique group of artists who are well-versed in traditional acting techniques and are also open to experimenting with immersive styles and expressive movements.
Step into the world of Rosie the Riveter with an immersive performance at the Military Aviation Museum! It's January 1942, and Eddie's Auto Parts Factory is struggling due to a halt in car part production. Rosie, the savvy secretary, proposes a shift to airplane parts to secure a government contract. Amidst the radio broadcasts and ration books of the era, Rosie breaks tradition and makes history, becoming an iconic symbol that inspired women to join the workforce. Experience Virginia playwright Trey Clarkson's dynamic script in this new adaptation by ROŪGE.
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
ROSIE O'CONNELL begins as a secretary with big dreams but little confidence, working for Eddie Kendrick at the auto parts factory. Her transformation from an office worker to the face of a national campaign is driven by her innate resilience and determination. As the story unfolds, Rosie becomes more assertive, discovering her talent for leadership and marketing. By the end, she not only represents the strength of women during wartime but also becomes a savvy business leader who changes the rules of the game.
HELEN HENLY | The head of a local ladies’ club, rooted in conventional values and the belief that women should remain in their prescribed roles. Initially dismissive of the war as “someone else’s problem,” Helen resists the changing social landscape and tries to cling to the old ways. She’s engaged to John Stanley, but her relationship is tested as the world around them shifts. While she starts as a figure of resistance to change, Helen eventually faces her own fears and prejudices, grappling with how the war is transforming not just society but her own life.
EDDIE KENDRICK | Owner of the auto parts factory that becomes a wartime production hub. He’s shrewd, practical, and willing to adapt his business for profit. Eddie quickly realizes the potential of Rosie and throws his full support behind her. Though primarily driven by profit, Eddie’s arc involves him recognizing the value and strength of the women working in his factory. He’s not a villain but a complex opportunist who, in his own way, becomes an unexpected ally to the cause.
JOHN STANLEY | A charming top salesman at the factory who enlists in the military, driven by both patriotism and a desire to prove himself. Though engaged to Helen, he finds himself increasingly drawn to Rosie, admiring her transformation and newfound confidence. His story explores the pressures of war and how his relationships and priorities shift.
KATHERINE HARLTEY | Rosie’s closest confidante and the brain of the operation. A natural problem-solver and science enthusiast, she is essential in helping the factory optimize production. She’s all about facts, figures, and logic, sometimes struggling to connect emotionally with others. Though she initially prefers to remain in the background, she grows in confidence and becomes an essential strategist for Rosie and the factory’s operations.
MARGARET MILLER | A member of the ladies’ club who is caught between her social obligations and her growing desire to support the war effort. With her husband overseas, she carries the burden of worry while trying to maintain a brave face for her friends. Margaret’s journey is one of discovering her own strength and finding purpose outside of traditional roles. Her friendship with Katherine adds a layer of warmth and humanity to the story.
MARJORIE STINSON | The most experienced worker at the factory, with unmatched technical skills and an encyclopedic knowledge of machines. She’s tough, no-nonsense, and commands respect on the factory floor. She’s fiercely protective of the other women and becomes a mentor figure for many.
TOMMY & JASPER | Mechanics who work for Eddie. They are the factory’s backbone, handling the machinery and ensuring everything runs smoothly. Though they are initially skeptical of women taking on factory jobs, they grow to respect Rosie, Marjorie, and the others. They provide comic relief but also serve as a barometer for changing attitudes toward women in the workplace.
MELINDA | A model hired for the factory’s marketing campaign, meant to appeal to the public’s idea of the “ideal” woman. Though she’s brought in to represent the campaign’s glamour, she’s frustrated by the superficial nature of her role and starts to envy the women on the factory floor who are making a real impact. Until tragedy strikes.
MARY JANE HILTON | Eddie’s niece, full of youthful energy and dreams. She’s popular among the factory workers and has many suitors, but her cheerfulness hides deep worries about her brother, who is deployed. She represents the toll that the war takes on young people trying to maintain a semblance of normal life while grappling with uncertainty and fear.
THE COLONEL | A no-nonsense military official who oversees the collaboration between the factory and the military. He becomes invested in replicating Eddie’s success across the country. He’s a symbol of the government’s growing reliance on civilian industry to support the war effort.
MARY | The Colonel’s secretary, but she’s much more than that—she’s the bridge between the military and civilian worlds. Skilled in both bureaucratic processes and people management, she ensures that communication remains smooth between the different sides. She’s a behind-the-scenes powerhouse who knows how to make things happen, often nudging events in the right direction with quiet competence.
