Real Women Have Curves (Josefina López) is a heartfelt, comedic drama set in 1987 East L.A., where Ana García, a brilliant Mexican-American young woman, balances her dream of college with the urgent realities of family obligation in her sister’s struggling sewing shop. As immigration fears loom, body image and self-acceptance collide with cultural expectations and a mother-daughter power struggle. With an ensemble of working-class Latinas, the play offers humor, grit, and significant emotional stakes perfect for directors drawn to stories about immigration, identity, resilience, and choosing your own future without abandoning your roots.Ana: 18, sister of Estela, daughter of Carmen. She is a recent high-school graduate and a young feminist who wants to go to college but is stuck in the factory helping out her sister.
Estela: 34, owner of the “Garcia Sewing Factory,” a hopeless romantic at heart, but a hard worker.
Carmen: 50, mother of Ana and Estela. She has a talent for storytelling and gossip.
Pancha: 32, very mellow in her ways, but quick with her tongue, very Catholic and very traditional at times.
Rosali: 29, sweet and easygoing, but has a secret and is insecure about her sexual appeal.
