SHOW DESCRIPTION
Rodgers & Hammerstein’s first collaboration remains, in many ways, their most innovative, setting the standards and rules of modern musical theatre. In a Western territory just after the turn of the 20th century, a high-spirited rivalry between local farmers and cowboys provides a colorful background for Curly, a charming cowboy, and Laurey, a feisty farm girl, to play out their love story. Their romantic journey, as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road, contrasts with the comic exploits of brazen Ado Annie and hapless Will Parker in a musical adventure embracing hope, determination, and the promise of a new land.
CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS
All characters can be portrayed by any ethnicity.
Please note: songs listed are those the character sings in the show. Please choose a different song for your audition.
Aunt Eller (Mezzo) Laurey’s aunt; a mature woman who is stern but has a heart of gold. Aunt Eller is a respected authority within the community who is practical but with a good sense of humor. Primarily an acting role, with some singing.
Songs: verses in The Farmer and the Cowman, and solo lines in Oklahoma!, Kansas City and The Surrey with the Fringe on Top.
Gender: Female Presenting

Curly (High Baritone) A charming cowboy with a playful nature and a confident swagger born from his true skill. Curly means well most of the time but has a little bit of a spiteful streak, which comes out when Laurie plays coy with him and when he discovers a rival in the farmhand Jud. He is in pursuit of Laurey and doesn’t quite understand why she hasn’t fallen instantly for him.
Songs: Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’, Surrey with the Fringe on Top, People Will Say We’re in Love, Poor Jud Is Dead, Oklahoma!
Gender: Male Presenting

Laurey (Soprano) She is a spunky and smart, but naïve young woman who has trouble admitting what she wants. She’s in love with Curly but enjoys playing games and that, coupled with her impulsive nature, get them all into trouble.
Songs: Many a New Day, People Will Say We're in Love, Out of My Dreams, and solo lines in The Surrey with the Fringe on Top, Laurey's Entrance and Oklahoma!
Gender: Female Presenting

Will Parker (Tenor) A young, simple cowboy who is smitten with Ado Annie. Despite his poor judgment and comic inability to handle money, Will manages – somehow – to win Ado Annie’s hand. Will is a dance role, tap dancer preferred.
Songs: All Er Nothin’, Kansas City, sung lines in The Farmer and the Cowman.
Gender: Male Presenting

Ado Annie (Soprano) A naive, innocent, and gullible young woman. Ado Annie has just discovered what it means to be an attractive young girl and is easily charmed by whichever man is complimenting her at the moment. Comic gifts are a plus.
Songs: I Can't Say No!, All er Nothin', and various solo lines.
Gender: Female Presenting

Jud Fry (Low Baritone) A farmhand for Aunt Eller, Jud is a social outcast with a murky and questionable past. He works hard to take care of the ranch for Aunt Eller and Laurey, and he has developed feelings for Laurey. Lonely but unsettling, Jud is desperate for connection, making his desire for Laurey both heartbreaking and potentially dangerous.
Songs: Lonely Room, Pore Jud Is Daid.
Gender: Male Presenting

Ali Hakim (Baritone) A traveling peddler who says he’s from Persia. He likes pretty things and pretty women. Ali Hakim is an opportunist, a shrewd businessman, and a bit of a player. A HUGE personality with one solo number, but, honestly, singing takes a back seat to laughs in this role.
Song: It’s a Scandal! It’s an Outrage!
Gender: Male Presenting

Andrew Carnes (Tenor) The overprotective father of Ado Annie. He defends his daughter with his ever-present shotgun. He is a rancher and doesn’t feel very kind to cowboys in general.
Song: The Farmer and the Cowman, sung lines in Oklahoma!
Gender: Male Presenting

Gertie Cummings (Alto or Soprano) Gertie is an obnoxious loudmouth girl with a “unique” laugh. She has eyes for Curly and jumps on the chance to go with him to the Box Social.
Gender: Female Presenting

Ensemble – Cow hands, farm girls, and others who make up the community. Looking for strong dancers and/or singers to fill this vital part of the cast.
Descriptions and information are also available on the LTWS website: https://www.ltofws.org/auditions.
