City Theatre Austin is holding auditions for Moliere’s Tartuffe or, the Hypocrite adapted and directed by Payton Trahan. This is an open audition. Actors of any race, sexual orientation, gender expression, ability, age, and creed are encouraged to audition. Casting all roles.
When: April 15 and 16, 2025; 6:30 – 9:30 pm. One-hour spot by appointment. You will be auditioning in a group. (Potential callbacks Monday April 21st, 6:30 – 9:30)
Where: Genesis Creative Collective, 1507 Wilshire Blvd. There will be signs posted to direct you to the space.
Actors of any race, sexual orientation, gender expression, ability, age, and creed are encouraged to audition. Casting all roles.
Show dates are June 13th - 29th, with rehearsals beginning on April 28th.
Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. We will send the sides a few days before auditions. You will be auditioning with monologues, a reader, and/or paired with other actors. Please dress for comfort and movability.

Synopsis: In the classic comedy Tartuffe, the title character fakes extreme piety to gain the affection of Orgon, the patriarch of a family Tartuffe stays with as a houseguest. Orgon’s adulation of Tartuffe tears the family apart. To save Orgon from his own folly and themselves from its consequences, Orgon’s family launches a campaign to expose and punish Tartuffe, rescue their own futures, and restore harmony to their lives.
Characters:
Madame Pernelle - 50s+ (Featured). Orgon's mother, and a devout believer in Tartuffe's piety. *Could be presented as a man in drag*
Orgon - 40s-50s (Lead). Once a brave and righteous soldier, he is easily fooled and enamored by Tartuffe's act. *Will have staged intimacy with Elmire, may have staged intimacy with Tartuffe*
Elmire - 30s-40s (Supporting). Orgon's second wife and the object of Tartuffe's obsession. She is beautiful, rich, and popular, but is also deeply loyal, intelligent, and virtuous. *Will have staged intimacy with Orgon and Tartuffe*
Damis - 20s (Supporting). Mariane's twin, hot headed and impetuous. He openly despises Tartuffe's influence.
Mariane - 20s (Supporting). Damis' twin, demure and dutiful. She is in love with Valère. *Will have staged intimacy with Valère*
Cléante - 30s-40s (Supporting). Elmire's sibling. They are a scholar, and typically the voice of reason.
Tartuffe - 30s-50s (Lead). The titular hypocrite. He has invaded the House of Orgon and is not who he claims to be. *Will have staged intimacy with Elmire and may have staged intimacy with Orgon and Dorine* *May appear in underwear*
Dorine - 20s-40s (Lead). Mariane's maid. She is quick witted and sharped tongued, and will always share her advice, warranted or not. *May have staged intimacy with Tartuffe*
Valère - 20s (Supporting). Damis' best friend, and Mariane's fiancé. He is "stupid in love". *Will have staged intimacy with Mariane*
Monsieur Loyal - 40s+ (Featured). A bailiff who serves the eviction notice to Orgon.
Police Officer - any age (Featured). A messenger from the King.
Flipotte - 20s (Ensemble). Madame Pernelle's servant. This is a silent role.
Laurant - 20s+ (Ensemble). Tartuffe's servant. This is a silent role.
