Auditions will be held on Monday, 2/16 and Tuesday, 2/17, beginning at 7:00 PM. Please prepare an acapella song of your choosing. Reading will consist of sides from the libretto.Show dates are May 15-31, Fri, Sat; Sunday Matinees.
A smash hit off Broadway and on, this Obie-winning musical tells the story of internationally-ignored song stylist and problematic non-binary trans icon Hedwig Schmidt.
Backed by their hard-rocking band, “The Angry Inch,” Hedwig tells the hilarious and heartbreaking story of their chaotic and difficult life, their relationship to the rock superstar Tommy Gnosis, and Tommy’s ride to fame on the songs Hedwig wrote for him during their brief relationship. It’s rocking, funny, touching, and ultimately inspiring to anyone who has felt life gave them an inch when they deserved a mile.
ACT is looking for adventurous creatives with a talent for anarchy. We will be addressing the current encroaching awfulness by exploring previous similar iterations. Hedwig and their band are timely and timeless, ageless ( yet aging), angry, heartbroken, brilliant, on the cusp of revelation, and very, very hungover.
Also, there is singing and sex jokes.
The Cast-
Hedwig: Usually Hedwig has been cast as a cis man who then performs in “drag”. Hedwig’s gender is very much non-binary. We are most likely looking for someone assigned male at birth, with a hard rocking belt, and a heartfelt croon. Hedwig is a magical monster who has lived through war, heartbreak, critical disinterest, poverty, most likely various addictions, and certainly the very worst of thirty years of fashion trends. They are youngish, wise for their years and still incredibly stupid in a great many important ways. They had the talent to make a God to worship, but lacked the foresight to know that God would leave them once he learned all Hedwig’s best songs.
Yitzhack: Yitzhack is generally played by someone assigned female at birth and is referred to in the text as a drag queen. Hedwig does not let them perform at all, keeps them from wearing “lady clothes”, and making Yitzhack assist the show by withholding their Visa. Yitzhack is patient, wise, quiet, just as talented as Hedwig, and in spite of everything, truly believes that Hedwig’s act could be good. And that Hedwig can be good. Yitzhack can say more with a sideways look than Hedwig can with ten dick jokes.
The Angry Inch: Keyboard, guitar, and drums, the Angy Inch is Hedwig’s mistreated back-up band, performing on stage. A motley crew, most likely picked up with promises of international fame and fortune that didn’t sound nearly as convincing once the whiskey was gone, they are forced to play for Hedwig because Hedwig has their visas as well. We are searching for three hard souls with soft hearts who love music, community, and dick jokes. (note: Albany Civic Theater is open to discussing compensation.)
