Wilkes Playmakers is proud to announce auditions for THE WIZARD OF OZ produced by special arrangement with Concord Theatricals! Audition dates are Monday and Tuesday, April 27 and 28 beginning at 6:00 p.m. at Benton Hall, 300 D Street, North Wilkesboro. The auditions will be held on the main floor in the Great Hall. Auditionees may fill out an audition form in advance on the Wilkes Playmaker Facebook page. The forms will also be available each night of auditions in the Great Hall. April 27 & 28 will be the adult roles only along with the role of Dorothy.
*Auditions for the children's roles will be held separately in early August.
Notes from the Director, Karen Reynolds:
1- There will be cold readings from the script - no memorization necessary .
2- Dorothy, Glinda, Cowardly Lion, Tinman and Scarecrow will be required to sing their signature songs. Carol Huffman, our Musical Director will be available both nights to play for you.
3- The play will be presented on Thanksgiving weekend and the first weekend in December and rehearsals will start in October.
4- For best exposure, I suggest you come to both nights of auditions - although it is certainly not mandatory!
Roles Available with brief descriptions:
Dorothy Gale - Part child/part young woman. Could be anywhere from 14 to 19 years old. Coming to auditions with braids would be a plus.
Aunt Em - She's older - graying hair (wig or spray could work) and stern at times - but loves her family.
Uncle Henry - A sweet older uncle, takes everything lightly and just goes about his business. Even Almira Gulch can't ruffle his feathers.
Glinda the Good Witch - Personality full of light. If you don't have reddish hair - will be looking for a red wig - or a rinse for your hair. She's known for "the hair". Bubbly and protective of Dorothy (mother figure for Dorothy in Oz and teaches her "There's no place like home").
Emerald City Guard - Quirky fella! Has to allow Dorothy and friends to pass through the gate into Oz. Talk sings.
The Cowardly Lion, Tin Man and Scarecrow - all represent father figures to Dorothy. They give her courage, a heart and encourage her to use her brain! Ideally, I would like these characters, as in the movie, to be father figure age.
The Wicked Witch of the West - Bad to the bone. Please watch the movie if auditioning for this role. She is ICONIC. Watch her movements, listen to her voice - facial expressions - the way she moves her hands.
Professor Marvel - Happy go lucky seller of potions and a reader of fortunes - who convinces Dorothy to turn around and get home as soon as she can. There's a storm coming!
The Wizard of OZ - He should be small in stature. Not at all the big voice and giant head with fog he pretends to be. Just an ordinary man. His charade is discovered and he tries to make it up to Dorothy by offering to take her home in his balloon.
I've loved The Wizard of Oz and these characters for as long as I can remember! This show is pure joy for me and will be my 4th time directing it.
I hope you will have as much fun auditioning as I will have watching you!
Relax, have fun, throw nerves out the window and become one of your favorite Oz characters for a few hours.
