Ages of cast 18 to senior adult
In a communal residence in New England, four developmentally disabled men live under the supervision of an earnest, but increasingly burned-out young social worker named Jack. Norman, who works in a doughnut shop and is unable to resist the lure of the sweet pastries, takes great pride in the huge bundle of keys that dangles from his waist; Lucien P. Smith has the mental capacity of a five-year-old but imagines that he is able to read and comprehend the weighty books he lugs about; Arnold, the ringleader of the group, is a hyperactive, compulsive chatterer, who suffers from deep-seated insecurities and a persecution complex; while Barry, a brilliant schizophrenic who is devastated by the unfeeling rejection of his brutal father, fantasizes that he is a golf pro.
Character List:
ARNOLD WIGGINS: The anxious, hyperactive ringleader who compulsively chatters and suffers from deep insecurities and a persecution complex.
LUCIEN P. SMITH: An African American with the mental capacity of a five-year-old who imagines he can comprehend weighty, serious books.
NORMAN BULANSKY: A gentle man who works at a doughnut shop, loves sweet pastries, and takes pride in a massive bundle of keys dangling from his waist.
BARRY KLEMPER: A highly intelligent man diagnosed with schizophrenia. He manages his condition by retreating into a detailed fantasy world where he is a highly successful golf pro, despite not actually knowing how to play the game.
JACK: The primary caregiver and social worker assigned to supervise the group home. He is deeply compassionate and genuinely cares for the men. However, he is severely burned out by the low-paying, high-stress demands of public social work and struggles with his decision to take a better job elsewhere.
SHEILA: Norman's girlfriend. Like Norman, she faces mental disabilities. She is also obsessed with Norman's prized keys.
MR. KLEMPER: Barry's brutal, abusive, and physically aggressive father. His visit to the apartment breaks Barry's fragile emotional state and highlights the tragic realities of his upbringing.
