The Adults
Dewey Finn (Plays Guitar and Sings Rock Tenor): The protagonist, Dewey is a struggling rockstar who is kicked out of his band at the beginning of the show. In need of money, he poses as a substitute teacher and recreates his band with the students, who are musical prodigies. Dewey is desperate, energetic, dull-witted, and often more childish than his students.
Rosalie Mullins (Mezzo Soprano): Rosalie is the high-strung school principal. She has a secret love of rock music, and longs to be more carefree.
Ned Schneebly (Baritone): Dewey's longtime friend, former bandmate, and current roommate. Ned is a pushover, especially when it comes to his girlfriend, Patty. Dewey impersonates Ned to get the substitute teaching job.
Patty Di Marco (Soprano): Ned's pushy, demanding girlfriend. She hates Dewey and wants him out of their lives.
The Kids
Summer (Mezzo Soprano): One of the brightest students at the school, Summer initially hates Dewey, but becomes the band’s manager in an effort to strengthen her college applications.
Zack (Guitarist, Tenor): The band’s lead guitarist who is desperate to impress his workaholic father.
Lawrence (Keyboardist): A boy who lacks confidence in his abilities, until Dewey convinces his to stick with the band.
Freddy (Drummer, Tenor): A rambunctious boy who is often disruptive during rehearsal, Freddy is always told by his father (and Summer) that he isn’t smart.
Katie (Bassist): A quiet, serious girl who plays the cello in the orchestra, but takes up the bass for the band. She is often emotionless, and Dewey works hard to bring the passion out of her.
Tomika (Mezzo Soprano): A shy new student who is accepted off the wait list, but despite not having any friends becomes the lead singer in the band because of her beautiful voice.
Shonelle and Marcy (Backup Vocals): Two talented girls who become the backup singers and dancers for the band but struggle with blending into the background too much.
Billy (Tenor): A flamboyant and artistic boy with a love for style and fashion.
Mason (Tech): A nerdy, tech-savvy boy who designs all the lighting and special effects for the band using his laptop.
James (Security): A boy who has the job of watching for teachers during rehearsals and alerting the rest of the band so they can hide the instruments.
Sophie and Madison (Backup Dancers): Two girls who become the band’s talented backup dancers. They are usually seen together, much like Shonelle and Marcy.
