Please note: Part of our role as a nonprofit performing arts organization and as theatremakers is to recognize and celebrate the differences in humanity that make us one. Theatre is a platform for building connection, empathy, and understanding — it gives a voice to those historically without one — it fosters a community. We are committed to creating a safe artistic atmosphere where the entirety of our community is represented and has a voice. Unless strictly and specifically mandated from the playwright, all roles are open and available to anyone regardless of race, color, or body type.

ABOUT THE SHOW:
From the very first note, Once draws you in and never lets go. This emotionally captivating musical is the only show to have music that won an Academy Award, a Grammy Award, an Olivier Award and a Tony Award.
On the streets of Dublin, an Irish musician and a Czech immigrant are drawn together by their shared love of music. Over the course of one fateful week, an unexpected friendship and collaboration quickly evolves into a powerful but complicated love story, underscored by emotionally charged music. Featuring all of the magical songs from the critically acclaimed film, including the Oscar-winning "Falling Slowly," this achingly beautiful, joyously uplifting show strikes an unforgettable chord in audiences and speaks to the power of music to connect us all. A show like that only comes around Once.
We are seeking actor/singer/musicians for various roles in Once. While playing an instrument is not a requirement for this production, it is strongly preferred in order to meet the concept and needs of this story.

WHEN: Sunday, June 27 beginning at 12:00pm

PREPARATIONS:
• Please sing a short folk/rock song (one minute or less) in the style of the show (see artist reference list at the end of this notice.) If you are able, be prepared to accompany yourself on the instrument that you are most proficient in. There will be a keyboard in the room, and a piano accompanist if you are unable to accompany yourself. Please bring sheet music in the correct key and clearly marked. Actors must bring any other instrument(s) they intend to play for the audition.
• Please feel free to submit band reels and other promotional material for review to [email protected]. All instruments are encouraged, but the score consists of parts for: guitar, piano, ukulele, mandolin, cello, melodica, violin, banjo, bass guitar, accordion, and drums/percussion.
• From the Director: In lieu of a monologue, please prepare your favorite story-joke. I am interested in seeing how you tell a story. Characters and dialects in the vein of Irish folktales are a plus! If you do not play an instrument, but feel you may be able to learn some percussion instruments, I encourage you to audition. A note on dialects: Do not feel the need to audition with a dialect. Dialect training will be part of the rehearsal process. All ethnicities are encouraged to audition.
• Please prepare a theatrical resume. A headshot is strongly encouraged.

AVAILABLE ROLES:
Please note: “Girl” must play the piano, and “Guy” must play the guitar, but other characters may not be set in stone. We do need a cast member to play violin/fiddle, but it may be someone other than “Reza,” who traditionally plays that instrument.
Girl: Female, 25-40. Mezzo-Soprano. Direct, intelligent, no nonsense, and witty. Should have something ‘other’ about her. Has had to work hard at life but doesn’t think she deserves any sympathy. Must play the piano and sing extremely well. Must have a strong Czech (Eastern European) accent.
Guy: Male, 25-40. Baritone. A struggling Irish musician. Lost and a bit sad, but extremely appealing. Works with his Da in a vacuum repair shop. Must sing and play guitar extremely well. Must have a strong Irish accent.
Billy: Male, 30-49. Baritone. A large Irish man. Owner of the music store where Girl plays piano. Loud, funny and protective of Girl but also has a vulnerability. Must sing and play guitar* well. Must have a strong Irish accent.
Reza: Female, 25-29. Soprano. A sexy, funny, smart Czech girl. Often a bit larger than life. Must sing and play violin/fiddle* extremely well. Must have a strong Czech (Eastern European) accent.
Baruska: Female, 45+. Alto. Mother of Girl. A cool but caring Czech mother who likes a full house and full stomachs. Doesn’t possess many inhibitions. Must sing and play the accordion/piano* well. Must have a strong Czech (Eastern European) accent.
Bank Manager: Any gender identity, 30-49. Vocal type open. Seems quite prim and proper but has a secret passion for music. Must sing and play guitar* and cello* well. Must have a strong Irish (Cork) accent.
Da: Male, 50+. Vocal type open. Guy’s dad. A man of few words, but a lovely and caring father. Must play guitar*, ukulele/ mandolin* well. Must have a strong Irish accent.
Svec: Male, 20-39. Baritone. A real odd ball. Loves television and coffee. Must play guitar* and drum kit* extremely well. Must have a strong Czech (Eastern European) accent.
Andrej: Male, 20-29. Baritone. Earnest and kind. It works well if he has a slight build, made slighter by his oversized interview suit. An employee at a fast-food chain, but has big dreams. Must play guitar* and bass guitar* extremely well. Must have a strong Czech (Eastern European) accent.
Eamon: Male, 20-49. Baritone. The music studio manager where Guy and Girl record their album. A tough nut to crack but eventually gives into the musicians’ talents. Must sing and play guitar* (and piano*) well. Must have a strong Irish accent.
Emcee: Male, 20-49. Baritone. The emcee at a bar. A good-natured ball buster. Must sing and play guitar* (and piano*) extremely well. Must have a strong Irish accent.
Ex-Girlfriend: Female, 20-39. Mezzo-Soprano. Guy’s ex-girlfriend who now lives in New York. Kind, lovely and likeable. Must play violin* extremely well. Must have a strong Irish accent.
Ivanka: Female. Can play 6-10 years old. Czech-born. Girl’s daughter. Has a sweet-natured temperament. Must be comfortable performing on stage. Singing or playing instrument a plus, but not required.
