In a quiet Texas town, the devoutly Christian Margery runs the church’s puppet ministry. But when her shy teen son Jason’s hand puppet, Tyrone, seemingly takes on a life of its own—foul-mouthed, violent, and shockingly honest—chaos erupts. There are roles for three male-identifying actors and two female-identifying actors. Auditioners should be comfortable with choreographed physical violence and intimacy.
Character Descriptions
JASON / TYRONE
Male-presenting, Reads 17–20s.
A shy, anxious teen coping with the recent loss of his father. Must have superb comedic timing and extraordinary physical/voice dexterity to portray Tyrone, his possessed hand puppet—aggressive, profane, confident, and demonic. Actors must switch rapidly between characters; puppet skills a plus but not required at audition.

MARGERY
Female-presenting, Reads 30s–40s.
Jason’s mother, struggling with grief and emotional instability. A church leader trying desperately to keep things together. Both comedic and dramatic range required; vulnerability under pressure is key.

TIMOTHY
Male-presenting, Reads late teens–20s (actor playing Timothy must be at least 18 years old)
A rebellious, sexually charged teen and classmate of Jason. Throws himself at Margery with chaotic energy. Strong physicality and comedic instincts needed.

JESSICA / JOLENE
Female-presenting, Reads 17–20s.
A bright, sarcastic, empathetic teen. Also operates/voices Jolene, her own puppet. Must have skill switching between characters; puppet experience helpful.

Male-presenting, Reads 40s–60s.
Earnest, lonely, and deeply awkward. A pastor who tries (poorly) to counsel Margery and maintain order. Warm-hearted, with strong comedic timing
