Synopsis: Mary is having strange dreams.
OLIVIA— mid 20s, cis woman, former aspiring actor, recently converted to Catholicism, marginally delusional, Mary’s childhood best friend, doing a very classic tiktok influenced trad wife thing. Must be comfortable with some light intimacy (kisses, embraces) and violence. Must be comfortable with the use of homophobic, misogynistic, and transphobic language.
DEAN— mid 30s, cis man, a playwright on the rise, a Catholic convert, cool, gorgeous, and seemingly self assured with a fanatical streak, Olivia’s boyfriend, has that Brooklyn intellectual aesthetic, was probably part of Dimes Square. Must be comfortable with intimacy (intense kisses, embraces, full body contact) and some more intense violence. Must be comfortable with the use of homophobic, misogynistic, and transphobic language.
Additional info:
*Actors auditioning for these roles will be asked to read alongside the actor playing Mary, to gauge cast chemistry.
This play involves substantial staged intimacy and staged violence. This includes various kisses and embraces for all three characters, explicit sexual contact of dubious consensuality between Mary and Dean (offstage intercourse is implied following this contact), strikes, holds, and physical/domestic abuse, as well as the use of homophobic, misogynistic, and transphobic language.
All staged intimacy, violence, and strong language will be coordinated and choreographed (where applicable) with the guidance of trained professionals. An intimacy coordinator certified in mental health first aid will be available to attend any and all rehearsals involving challenging and charged subject matter, at the actors’ or creative team’s discretion.
Please do not hesitate to seek further information about the specific intimacy and violence in this script at your audition, or about the process of intimacy and fight choreography, so as to make a fully informed decision to pursue the role. While it’s understood that this subject matter will likely be challenging for actors, an accepted casting offer will be taken as embodied, informed consent from the actor to take on that challenge, with the knowledge that Dreamwell will provide all resources at its disposal to support the cast and creative team.
