About the audition:
Auditions will consist of a dance combo, taught to everyone by choreographer Grayson Anthony, followed by cold readings from the script. Please come prepared to move. Those auditioning are required to wear a mask to enter and while seated waiting to audition and may remove their mask while onstage. All actors and crew members must be vaccinated and will be required to show proof of vaccination if cast.

Somewhere in America, an army of pre-teen competitive dancers plots to take over the world. And if their new routine is good enough, they’ll claw their way to the top at Nationals in Tampa Bay. A play about ambition, growing up, and how to find our souls in the heat of it all. Finalist of the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and winner of the 2017 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize.
Roles available:
Except for Dance Teacher Pat and The Moms, the characters are preteens played by adults of varying ages. Casting is open to as wide a range of humans as possible – age, gender, body type, ethnicity, etc. Some exceptions are noted in the descriptions. Dance experience is a bonus, but not required.
DANCE TEACHER PAT (M, 35-55, any ethnicity) The head of the dance studio. Not a new kid on the block.
AMINA (F, any age, any ethnicity) The star dancer.
ZUZU (F, any age, any ethnicity) Always second best.
CONNIE (F, any age, South Asian) A talented dancer, thinks they should play Gandhi.
LUKE (M, any age, any ethnicity) The only male dancer on the competition team.
MAEVE (F, any age, any ethnicity) The oldest and least talented dancer on the team.
SOFIA (F, any age, any ethnicity) Knows what’s up.
ASHLEE (F, any age, any ethnicity) Future president of a post-apocalyptic USA.
VANESSA (F, 40+, any ethnicity) Could have been a phenomenon. AKA The Crumpled Sailor.
THE MOMS (F, 40+, any ethnicity) Means well. Grown-up Wendy. Character doubling includes VANESSA.
