🤍 SYNOPSIS:
For the last eight months, the Borden family has been left mourning the sudden loss of their son and brother, Jack. Meanwhile, the recipient of his donated heart, Joy, has spent her time ruminating about whether she deserved to get a second chance. One day, she begins to feel an inexplicable connection with Jack, despite not knowing the identity of the person who saved her life. In a moment of unrest, Joy decides to reach out to his family, opening the doors to new connections that no one expected. Based on real events, this story explores family, grief, and the true power of the human spirit. (Drama, Comedy, Poignant)
✨ CHARACTERS:
(Ages for all characters are flexible. The director will cast whoever is best suited for the role. Some roles may be doubled up per the director's discretion.)
Jack (30s): The donor of the heart for Joy, appearing in spirit onstage. An ever-consistent presence that floats between Joy and his family, Jack seamlessly and effortlessly connects the two stories together with hardly a word. Rarely, if at all, does he leave the stage. He has a wonderful, calming presence, and you can’t help but watch every move and choice he makes on stage, without ever taking the limelight from the other actors. Jack is somewhat of a silent narrator, representing the audience while also being the curator of healing for both Joy and his family.
Hank (50-60s): The disgruntled, stoic, and indifferent father of Jack. This role is challenging with the arch of the character, marked by incredible resonance and strength. With his pessimistic and harsh outlook on life, you may not like Hank at all, but, by the end of the play, you can’t help but feel for the character and understand why he is the way he is.
Sammy (20-30s): A young primary school teacher who is lovable, eclectic, and very much in touch with nature, and also moonlights as a podcaster. She brings a great level of naivety and innocence to the role and has some of the best lines. Throughout the show, Sammy struggles to come to grips with the loss of her brother, and she really needs to stock up on more tissues!
Joy (20-30s): The title role player and heart transplant recipient. Battling the reality of whether she deserves a second chance and facing the family of the heart donor, Joy should build a lovely and (excuse the pun) heart-warming arc for the character. Usually sharing the stage with either Darla or Jack’s family, Joy must provide great depth and realness to the character, exuding the dry and blunt lookout of life to finally finding the much-needed closure she has been seeking.
Nurse and Darla (20-30s): The range between the two distinct characters is truly amazing. From being the soft, hearty Nurse that deals with Joy’s dry outlook post-heart surgery to the lively, cheeky but down-to-earth friend that is Darla. The actor should provide such a natural energy to both characters, with great comedic timing and chemistry opposite Joy. (NOTE: Depending on auditions, this role could be split into two actors.)
Alice (50-60s): Wife and mother of the Barlow Family. She floats between dealing with the loss of her dear son Jack, mitigating the temper of her harsh husband Hank, and wrangling her airy-fairy daughter Sammy. Alice exudes the meaning of “Mom”, from the loving tenderness a mother always has, to the passive-aggressive retorts and trying her best to keep her family going.
