Synopsis: Set eight months after the Aberfan Disaster of 1966, in which 144 people were killed (116 of them children), The Revlon Girl tells the real-life story of a group of bereaved mothers who met every week above a local hotel to talk, cry and even laugh without feeling guilty.
Roles:
SIAN: (Female Identifying – 20s-30s): Bright, hopeful, and eager to help, Sian is very much the instigator (and defender) of the evening’s event and is desperate for it to go well.
REVLON: (Female Identifying – 20s-30s): Smart, well-groomed, well-bred, and trusting. Revlon clearly does not come from a Welsh working-class mining village like the rest of the characters do.
MARILYN/JACKIE: (Female Identifying – 30s): Marilyn is introverted, tense, and fearful of change. Though outwardly simple, she is very focused. (The actor playing Marilyn will also voice the character of Jackie, who we only hear from offstage at the beginning of the show)
RONA: (Female Identifying – 30s): Rona is fiery, foul-mouthed, and indomitable. She finds strength in rage, rejects authority, and is easily set alight.
JEAN: (Female Identifying – 30s): Jean is stately, conservative, and sociable. Though she hails from the same background as Marilyn and Rona, Jean is now the wife of a respected church minister and therefore regards herself as a pillar of the community.
NOTE: All characters speak in a non-American dialect (Revlon speaks in a Bristol, UK, accent; the other four speak in a South Welsh accent). If called back, actors will be asked to read the synopsis of the show (shared at the top of this notice) in the dialect(s) of the character(s) they are called back for; please note that this does NOT have to be a flawless accent, nor will it secure a role or prevent you being cast – it just gives our dialect coach a sense of where you are with your dialects up front.
SET encourages performers of all ethnicities, gender identities, as well as performers with disabilities, to attend every audition.
If cast, all roles are on a volunteer basis and unpaid. Springs Ensemble Theatre is unable to hire members of Equity at this time.
First read of the show will take place in the week or two following casting. Actors will then spend several weeks before officially starting rehearsals working with our dialect coach. Full rehearsals will begin in mid- to late-April.
