Theatre Downtown will be holding auditions for A BRIGHT, NEW BOISE, directed by James Kitchens, on Monday, January 13th at 6:30p. The show will run from March 7-23, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sunday matinees.
"In the bleak, corporate break room of a craft store in Idaho, someone is summoning The Rapture. Will, who has fled his rural hometown after a scandal at his Evangelical church, comes to the Hobby Lobby, not only for employment, but also to rekindle a relationship with Alex, his brooding teenage son, whom he gave up for adoption several years ago. Alex works there along with Leroy, his adopted brother and protector, and Anna, a hapless young woman who reads bland fiction but hopes for dramatic endings. As their manager, foul-mouthed Pauline, tries ceaselessly to find order (and profit) in the chaos of small business, these lost souls of the Hobby Lobby confront an unyielding world through the beige-tinted impossibility of modern faith."
Character Breakdown:
Alex (Male, 18-25) is about to graduate high school and is planning to go to school for music. When his estranged father shows up to work at the same Hobby Lobby, his life is turned upside down.
Will (Male, late 30s-early 40s) is a man running from his past who tries to start anew by going to work at a Hobby Lobby where his son, Alex, works. His son who he has not seen since he was a baby.
Pauline (Female, 30s-40s) is the manager at the Hobby Lobby where A Bright New Boise takes place. She has brought the store back from the brink of being closed and has turned it into a thriving Hobby Lobby. The store is a bright spot in her life.
Leroy (Male; early to mid 20s) is an avid custom shirtmaker, and he prides himself on pushing people's boundaries. He is also fiercely protective of his adopted brother, Alex.
Anna (Female; late 20s-early 30s) is currently working her 8th job in the past few years, and is trying to find her place in the world and someone to trust.
