SYNOPSIS:
Aaron Sorkin’s Broadway hit A Few Good Men is the trial of two Marines for complicity in the death of a fellow Marine at Guantanamo Bay. The Navy lawyer, a callow young man more interested in softball games than the case, expects a plea bargain. Prodded by a female member of his defense team, the lawyer eventually makes a valiant effort to defend his clients and, in so doing, puts the military mentality and the Marine code of honor on trial and uncover a high-level conspiracy designed to eliminate weaker soldiers in the name of patriotism.
I am looking for an inclusive and diverse cast of actors to represent the military as it is today, and in 1985 when the story takes place.
Note: Ages are suggestions. Casting will depend on the best actor for the role.
MALE CHARACTERS:
Lt. J.G. Daniel A. Kaffee: Young Adult, Adult of approximately late 20s/early 30s. JAG lawyer known for settling cases out of court. Although he is extremely intelligent, he refuses to take his career seriously and has a callow and flippant personality. Biding his time in the JAG Corps until he can become a corporate lawyer. Son of a legendary lawyer and has big shoes to fill.
Lt. Col. Nathan Jessep: Adult, Mature Adult approximately in his 40s. The highest ranked character at GITMO. A golden boy of whom big things are expected by the Corps. Believes in the importance of the code and the Corps. He has the utmost faith in his own authority as a Marine, and in the sanctity of the Marine Corps. He is clever and well-read, and frequently uses sarcasm to humiliate those around him.
Lt. J.G. Sam Weinberg: Young Adult, Adult approximately late 20s/early 30s. JAG lawyer, and Kaffee’s friend and sometimes shares his flippant attitude. Although at the beginning of the play he’s not very sympathetic to the accused, he works hard for them. Sam is also very physically tired for most of the play, because he is sleep-deprived. He has a baby daughter at home (who is sure will say her first words any day now).
PFC Louden Downey: Late Teen, Young Adult/early 20s. One of two young men accused of murdering William Santiago, a fellow Marine. He is young and impressionable and believes deeply in the Marine code of honor: unit, Corps, God, country. The entire trial process is frightening and confusing to him. Downey usually follows Dawson’s lead.
Lance CPL. Harold W. Dawson: Young Adult/early 20s. Marine who attacks Santiago. Believes in the importance of the code and the Corps. Downey’s superior. Squad leader and deeply proud to be a Marine, and very concerned with upholding his personal code honor. Dawson is slightly faster on his feet than Downey and tends to make decisions for both of them.
Capt. Matthew A. Markinson: Adult, Mature Adult/40s. Marine with strong feelings about what happened to Santiago. Outranked by Jessep despite being older than him. Markinson is a good man tortured by his conscience. Tries to secretly push the truth to the forefront.
Lt. Jonathan James Kendrick: Young Adult, Adult of approximately late 20s/30s. Marine at GITMO, and superior of Dawson and Downey. Believes in the importance of code and the Corps. Believes God is always watching. Jessep describes him as “kind of a weasel, but an awfully good officer.” He is tough, even by Marine standards, and is an advocate of “Code Reds,” or hazing rituals designed to discipline new soldiers.
Lt. Jack Ross: Young Adult, Adult of approximately late 20s/early 30s. JAG attorney and prosecutor in this case. A thorn in the side of Kaffee/Sam/Joanne. Prosecuting attorney who solidly knows the law, the Marines, and his counterpart in court. Strong and honorable, likeable in a conflicting way. Good friends with Kaffee, but knows he must beat him.
Captain Isaac Whitaker: Adult, Mature Adult approximately in his 40s/50s or older. JAG attorney and is Kaffee and Sam’s boss. Although Kaffee has been assigned to the boys’ case by a higher office, Captain Whitaker is authorized to appoint additional counsel. He assigns Sam to help Kaffee, and allows Joanne (who he views as rather a pain) to defend Downey. He’s a friendly man but a busy one. NOTE: He has only two scenes in the first act.
CPL. Jeffrey Own Howard: Young Adult/early 20s. A key witness to what orders were given (or not) regarding Santiago. Goofy and fun Marine who provides a lot of comic relief, but also a lot of truth in what goes on behind the scenes of the Marine training.
CMDR. Walter Stone: Adult, Mature Adult approximately in his 40s/50s or older. Doctor at GITMO who examines Santiago’s body and determined the cause of death. Struggles with meshing his morality as a doctor with his loyalty to the Marines.
FEMALE CHARACTERS:
Lt. CMDR. Joanne Galloway: Young Adult, Adult approximately in her late 20s/early 30s. JAG lawyer. Takes her job seriously but is perceived as a pain in the butt. All heart, but not much experience. Essentially, she badgers her way into the case because she believes so strongly in making sure the boys get the legal representation they deserve.
ANY GENDER CHARACTERS:
Capt. Julius OR Julia Alexander Randolph: Mature Adult. The Judge presiding over the Santiago murder trial. They keep an orderly courtroom, strong with a firm fist and short, spark-like manner of speaking.
CHARACTERS THAT MAY OR MAY NOT BE DOUBLED DEPENDING ON INTEREST:
PFC. William T. Santiago: Late Teen, Young Adult/early 20s. Santiago is a Marine murdered at GITMO by Dawson and Downey. Was desperate to leave GITMO before this.
Tom: Late Teen, Young Adult/early 20s. Secretary to Jessep.
Airfield Orderly: Adult 20s/30s/40s/50s: He provides Markinson with the flight information
Sgt. at Arms. Young Adult/Adult: 20s/30s/40s Present in all Courtroom scenes
Lawyer #1: Young Adult/Adult: 20s/30s/40s
Lawyer #2: Young Adult/Adult: 20s/30s/40s
PFC Hammaker: Young Adult/early 20s
PFC Dunn: Young Adult/early 20s
MP #1: Young Adult/early 20s.
MPs 2-4
